Healthy Medicine #136: Overtreated

Dr Zieve talks with writer Shannon Brownlee about how systemic problems with our health-care system are causing poor outcomes for many Americans. Shannon Brownlee MS is acting director of the New America Health Policy Program at dartmouth College. A nationally known writer and essayist whose work has appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, New York Times Magazine, The New Republic, Slate, Time, and Washington Monthly among many other publications, she is best known for her groundbreaking work on avoidable health care, the patchy quality of medical evidence, and the implications for health-care policy. Her book, Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine is Making Us Sicker and Poorer, was named the best economics book of 2007 by New York Times economics correspondent David Leonhardt. Brownleeís current research and writing focus on issues surrounding delivery system reform, clinical evidence, and health care costs.

Healthy Medicine #135: Inflammation

Dr Zieve talks with Sunil Pai, MD, director of the Sanjevani Integrative Medicine Health & Lifestyle Center in Albuquerque, about the many faces and functions of inflammation in the body, what it means to our health, and ways to reduce it. Sunil Pai MD is board-certified in both Family Practice and Holistic Integrative Medicine in New Mexico, the first physician in the state to graduate as a Fellow of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, directed by Dr. Andrew Weil. He is the first physician in New Mexico certified by Dr. Deepak Chopra as a Primordial Sound Meditation Instructor, and a Creating Health (Ayurveda Lifestyle) Instructor. He is certified from the Institute of Functional Medicine as well as the first physician in New Mexico to be certified in Medical Acupuncture and Scalp Acupuncture through the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr Pai is also certified in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University and the T. Colin Campbell Foundation. Dr. Pai is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and active in publishing and lecturing in the field of Integrative Medicine, conducting seminars and workshops on various health topics.
